Takahe Flutes

What's New?

I've moved house and have had no workshop for a while. I have set up a new basic workshop and I am slowly making instruments and accessories again. At present, my turnaround time for website orders is about four weeks, because I still have quite a bit of work to do on the workshop and our new house.

The Nightingale is my interpretation of the English Flageolet of around 1800, as sold by instrument makers such as William Bainbridge. Crucially, the Nightingale features a two-chamber design as still featured by the North American Flute. Beware: many so-called flageolets sold today are really just tin whistles! The Nightingale is in the key of G (the G above middle C) and is a tone higher than the modern alto-recorder in F. You can hear the Nightingale on YouTube here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kvrYvKlilA (Cut and paste in to your browser)

The Nightingale has seven holes: the lowest is offset to be played by your pinky and gives a G#, a semitone above the lowest note (G). The extra hole allows a good sounding G# that is in tune without having to half-hole the lowest hole and also improves the tone of the A, which is generally weak on tin whistles. To allow both left- and right-handed players to play the Nightingale, there are two G# holes, one of which is blocked with an adjustable clip. If you don't want to use the G# feature at all, the clip can be used to cover both holes, making the fingering the same as a tin whistle.

The Nightingale is intended for the key of G major and related keys, including C, D, G Dorian, G Phrygian, Am and Em. It is actually fully chromatic, with a fingering chart included, although is not really practical for keys that require a lot of half-holing and cross-fingering.

Other features include:

  • A wooden mouthpiece (beak) with expanding windway.
  • A removable barrel section that allows slight adjustment of the tone of the instrument. The barrel section greatly reduces problems caused by condensation.
  • A bell that improves the volume of the lowest notes of each octave.
  • Each instrument is hand-made to order, with all notes individually hand tuned to concert pitch (A=440Hz)

You can hear me play a Takahe whistle on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvC6Jua8U24 (Cut and paste into your browser.)

The Takahe is named after a New Zealand native flightless bird thought to be extinct for half a century until rediscovered in a remote mountainous region.

This is a big whistle and is not recommended for beginners. However the Takahe features carefully offset tone holes to simplify fingering. With these offsets and use of the 'pipers grip' the Takahe can be played even if you have relatively small hands. NB: The hole offsets can be configured for right or left handed players and you can advise me which version you prefer at checkout.

These whistles are tough, made from PVC and wood with a fibreglass tuning slide. They feature: * A bell like a trumpet which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave compared to the higher ones. * A bore size of 27mm (1.06") making the tone more mellow than smaller bore whistles. * A curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a distinctive mellow and slightly 'breathy' tone. * Carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow. * The range of the Takahe is about two and a half octaves, C4 to G6, although some experience is required to make use of the notes in the third octave. * A very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to many PVC or aluminium whistles.

Besides the key of C, the whistle is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on D), in F major and D minor by half-holing the top hole (B), in G and E minor (see the chart for the F#) and of course Am.

NOTES: * Instruments are all handmade to order * Wooden parts are made from reclaimed timber, or from wood cut from my own trees.

The Ruru SP is a special edition of my standard Ruru low-D whistle. Beside special, the SP stands for Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. This St Patrick special edition has some additional features as follows:

First it has a tuning slide giving a small range of fine tuning. In particular, it can be tuned down to 432 Hz if need be. Furthermore, accuracy of intonation at 432 Hz is maintained by using the lower connection to tune the bell note and the E. About 6mm extra extension on the main slide and 3mm on the lower slide will do the trick.

Second, the bell and end of the head unit are painted an Irish green with a gold pinstripe .

Third, the mouthpiece is based on the design used for the Kotare aluminium whistle, with a stronger fipple cap than the standard Ruru.

Finally, the Ruru SP features a thumbhole to obtain the flat seventh (C instead of C#). Many players find this very useful to get a good sounding note without half-holing or cross-fingering.

You can hear me play a cover of Hebridean Dream by the Tannahill Weavers on a Ruru SP on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYmI4d0ALEE
(Cut and paste into your browser)

Besides the above special features, the standard features of the Ruru include these: • A small bell which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave compared to the higher ones. • A curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a distinctive mellow and slightly 'breathy' tone. • An aluminium 'transport' joint that allows the bell section to be rotated. This feature allows the optimum offset on the lowest hole (E) to be obtained for any player, left or right handed. • Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow. • The range is at least two octaves, D4 to C#6. • A very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to many PVC or aluminium whistles.

NOTES: • Instruments are all handmade to order • Wooden parts are made from reclaimed timber, or from wood cut from my own trees.

This instrument is an alto whistle, named after the tiny 6 gram native New Zealand rifleman. The pitch is lower than high D whistles like the Clarke or Feadog. The Rifleman whistles are tough, made from anodized aluminum, PVC and wood. They are available in a choice of two finishes, satin or chrome (choose when you check out). They feature:

  • A tuning slide to allow fine tuning about half a semitone each way
  • A small gold-painted bell which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave compared to the higher notes.
  • A curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a distinctive mellow and slightly breathy tone.
  • Accurate pitch, carefully hand tuned to A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.
  • A range of at least two octaves, Bb4 to A6
  • A very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to many PVC or aluminium whistles.
  • A chromatic fingering chart, although not intended as a fully chromatic instrument.

Besides the key of Bb, the Rifleman is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on C), in Eb and Cm by half-holing the A, in F major and D minor ( see chart for the E) and of course Gm.

Features of the Draco are:

  • They have a tapered bore, reducing the overall length a little
  • Each flute is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.
  • Fully sealed inside and out to minimize effects of moisture
  • Range is at least two octaves, D5 to C#7.

Besides D, the flute can easily be played in Dorian mode (scale starting on E), G major and E minor by half-holing the C# tone-hole, A major and F# minor (see fingering chart for the G#) and of course Bm. C major is also possible, requiring half holing or cross fingering of the C# tone-hole and half-holing of the F# tone-hole. Although simple flutes like the Draco are not intended to be fully chromatic, it is possible to play all 12 semitones, with only a few of them requiring half-holing.

These whistles are tough, made from chromed aluminum and PVC. They feature:

  • A small gold painted bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave compared to the higher notes.
  • A curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a distinctive tone.
  • Accurate pitch, carefully hand tuned to A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.
  • Range of two octaves, G4 to F#6.
  • A very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to most PVC or aluminium whistles.
  • A chromatic fingering chart, although not intended as a fully chromatic instrument.

You can hear me play the Kokako whistle on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTDkNYtDcgw

Besides the key of G, the whistle is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on A), in C and Am by half-holing the F#, in D and Bm (see chart for the C#) and of course Em.

The Draco is my unique handcrafted wooden soprano-D flute. The Draco is named after the flying lizard from South East Asia. The Draco has a quite different tone compared commercial penny whistles such as the Clarke or Feadog, due to its larger bore, bell shape, larger window and wooden construction.

Features of the Draco are:

  • They feature a bell which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave.

You can hear demo's of the Draco on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf5BWpxcWDY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4mxgDIr2No (Cut and paste into your browser)

Instruction sheet included, with chromatic fingering chart.

NOTES: * Sorry, photo props and lizard are not included. * Instruments are all handmade to order * Wooden parts are made from reclaimed timber, or from wood cut from my own trees.

The Silvereye flute plays the Am pentatonic scale and can be used for many musical styles including blues, jazz and folk music. The Silvereye was inspired by the Cherokee four-hole whistle. It is small and durable enough, with its hard-case, to take pretty much anywhere. Despite having only four tone-holes it can play nine of the twelve semi-tones of the Am scale. Furthermore, the Silvereye can be played with one hand. This allows you to use the pinky of the other hand in the bell, to obtain a G and G# below the normal range.

See and hear the Silvereye on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbPLEKL8zz8 (Cut and paste into your browser)

The Silvereye features:

  • All wooden construction
  • Compact size, only 17cm long
  • Accurately tuned to concert pitch
  • Range of just over one octave
  • Hard-case included

The Sigrún was inspired by the bone flutes played by the Vikings. A number of these have been recovered from archaeological sites in Scandinavia and beyond. The Sigrún is made from PVC with a wooden 'fipple' and has three tone holes, so can be played with one hand. The scale is G pentatonic minor, but missing the F (G, Bb, C, D). However, by cupping the bell with your other hand, more notes can be obtained, such as the F. The Sigrún features a ribbon for carrying around your neck, but the cat and helmet are not included, sorry!

The Kakariki-T is the Tuneable version of my delightful handcrafted soprano D penny whistle. The Kakariki-T is made primarily from aluminium and is named after the New Zealand native red-crowned parakeet. It has a more mellow tone than the Clarke, Feadog and similar whistles, because of its curved windway lip and relatively large bore. The whistle is tough, made from Al with a 1mm wall thickness. The fipple block is wooden, with a sturdy laminated plywood and fiberglass cover, which reduces the amount of condensation compared to whistles with a metal cover. Tuning is achieved via a hand-fitted fiberglass tuning slide.

Features of the Kakariki-T are * The mouthpiece is my well-proven design with the curved lip giving a distinctive mellow and slightly 'breathy' tone. * They feature a small bell (polished and lacquered) which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave. * Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow. * Range is at least two octaves, D5 to C#7. * My whistle has a very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to many PVC or aluminium whistles.

The Shikra is my take on the Ghanaian atenteben, a fully chromatic flute in the key of Bb. Like a recorder, it has a thumb-hole and also needs only two half-holed notes for the full twelve semitones. Unlike a recorder or a penny whistle, its bottom note is the maj 7th (A) and the windway is on the bottom instead of the top. A fingering chart is supplied with the instrument. Atentebens are usually made from bamboo, but my version is from PVC, so it is quite strong. The fipple design is similar to that of my penny whistles and the Shikra also adopts their small bell.

  • A curved lip like a classical flute giving a distinctive tone.

  • Each Shikra is hand tuned to concert pitch and is even tempered

  • The range of the instrument is just over two octaves, A4 to Bb6

BTW the Shikra is named after a small migratory bird of prey found in Ghana among other places.

Note: My instruments are usually shipped within three business days and delivery is generally within two weeks. Sorry, Shikra bird, guitar and violin not included.

The Piwakawaka is a handcrafted penny whistle in the key of A major, the result of all I have learned about whistles and flutes. You can hear me play my song 'Kokako Spring' on the very similar Kokako whistle on YouTube here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTDkNYtDcgw (Cut and paste into your browser)

This instrument is an alto whistle, named after the iconic native New Zealand fantail. The pitch is lower than high D whistles like the Clarke or Feadog. The Piwakawaka whistles are tough, made from anodized aluminum, PVC and wood.

  • A range of at least two octaves, A4 to G#6
  • A very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to many PVC or aluminium whistles.
  • A chromatic fingering chart, although not intended as a fully chromatic instrument.

Besides the key of A, the Piwakawaka is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on B), in D and Bm by half-holing the G#, in E major and C# minor ( see chart for the D#) and of course F#m.

There is a t-shirt featuring the Piwakawaka bird image also available from my Etsy store.

NOTES: * Sorry, t-shirt and photo props are not included * Instruments are all handmade to order * Wooden parts are made from reclaimed timber, or from wood cut from my own trees.

The Takahe Flutes 'Joni' is a handcrafted penny whistle in the key of A major and is named after the incomparable Joni Mitchell. The Joni is an alto whistle, lower than D whistles like the Clarke or Feadog. A is a convenient key for folk music, as A and related keys are relatively easy on the guitar. The Joni is tough, made from PVC. The whistle features a small bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes compared to the higher ones. The Joni also has a curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a more distinctive tone. Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow. Range is two octaves, A4 to G#5, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud! Besides the key of A, the whistle is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on B), in D by half-holing the G# and of course F#m. My whistle has a very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to most PVC or aluminium whistles and all feature the Takahe emblem of my Takahe Flutes brand. They are shipped in a triangular package which is very strong. You can see and hear me play a very similar whistle here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yad3gQQUCW4

A fair bit of work and trial and error went into developing the Bessie and its big sibling the Sonny. The Bessie is a tribute to the incomparable Bessie Smith. The flute plays the basic Blues scale, with some extra notes that are very useful. The coolest feature of the Bessie is that the 7th note is at the bottom, where you’ve wished it would be so often. Ever tried playing ‘Blowin in the Wind’ on a standard whistle?

The standard Blues scale is usually 1, 3, 4, b5, 5, b7, which needs only 5 finger holes. So, the Bessie has an extra hole to get the 2 (a B) and also a thumb hole to get the 6 (an F#). So the scale playable on the Bessie is:

A B C D D# E F# G

There are also a few accidentals that are quite useable as are shown in the fingering chart. And to add to the coolness factor, the tuneable feature allows the head unit to be fitted either way up: normal like a penny whistle, or upside down, like a clarinet.

NOTES: * Orders are usually shipped within three days and delivery is typically less than two weeks. * My standard shipping method is via untracked international airmail. * If an order has not arrived within 30 days of shipping notification, contact me and I will post another. * Some countries may charge relevant taxes such as GST or VAT and/or further postal charges.
