The Kotare is a tuneable handcrafted aluminum low penny whistle in the key of D major. The Kotare is an octave lower than D whistles like the Clarke or Feadog. It is named after the native New Zealand sacred kingfisher and is a development from my highly regarded Kereru. A demo is on YouTube here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tv13ydDHmrs

NB, This is a big whistle and is not recommended for beginners. However, the Kotare features carefully offset tone holes to simplify fingering. With the offsets and use of the 'pipers grip' the Kereru can be played even if you have relatively small hands. The hole offsets can be configured for right or left handed players, or with no offsets at all. You can advise me which version you prefer at checkout.

These whistles are tough, made primarily from aluminum, with some parts from wood and PVC. Features of the Kotare are:

  • Unlike many Al whistles, the wall thickness is only 1mm, so it is nice and light.
  • The Kotare is tuneable, about +/- 20 cents.
  • The mouthpiece is my well-proven PVC and wood design with the curved lip giving a distinctive mellow and slightly breathy tone.
  • They feature a small polished and lacquered bell, which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave
  • Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.
  • Tone holes are reamed and polished.
  • Includes a thumbrest.
  • Range is two octaves, D4 to C#6, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud!
  • My whistle has a very comfortable mouthpiece shape, with no Al exposed to contact the lips of the player.
  • User-guide and fingering chart included.

Besides D, the Kotare can easily be played B minor, in Dorian mode (scale starting on E), in G major and E minor by half-holing the C# hole, and in A major and F# minor by using the fingerings in the chart for a G#.

Sorry, Kotare bird not included ;-)

NOTES: * These whistles are made to order; orders are usually shipped within five business days and delivery is typically less than two weeks. * My standard shipping method is via untracked international airmail. * If an order has not arrived within 30 days of shipping notification, contact me and I will post another. * Some countries may charge relevant taxes such as GST or VAT and/or further postal charges

This little Skylark flute is small enough to fit in a pocket, yet loud enough to demand attention. It can be used for blues, jazz and folk music. Despite having only four tone-holes it can play nine of the twelve semi-tones of the G scale (eight in the high octave). The Skylark features:

  • A sturdy aluminium body, with a wooden fipple assembly.
  • Compact, only 23cm long.
  • Accurately tuned to concert pitch.
  • Sufficient volume to stand out in music groups.

Notes: * Photo props are not included.

The Nightingale is my interpretation of the English Flageolet of around 1800, as sold by instrument makers such as William Bainbridge. Crucially, the Nightingale features a two-chamber design as still featured by the North American Flute. Beware: many so-called flageolets sold today are really just tin whistles! The Nightingale is in the key of G (the G above middle C) and is a tone higher than the modern alto-recorder in F. You can hear the Nightingale on YouTube here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kvrYvKlilA (Cut and paste in to your browser)

The Nightingale has seven holes: the lowest is offset to be played by your pinky and gives a G#, a semitone above the lowest note (G). The extra hole allows a good sounding G# that is in tune without having to half-hole the lowest hole and also improves the tone of the A, which is generally weak on tin whistles. To allow both left- and right-handed players to play the Nightingale, there are two G# holes, one of which is blocked with an adjustable clip. If you don't want to use the G# feature at all, the clip can be used to cover both holes, making the fingering the same as a tin whistle.

The Nightingale is intended for the key of G major and related keys, including C, D, G Dorian, G Phrygian, Am and Em. It is actually fully chromatic, with a fingering chart included, although is not really practical for keys that require a lot of half-holing and cross-fingering.

Other features include:

  • A wooden mouthpiece (beak) with expanding windway.
  • A removable barrel section that allows slight adjustment of the tone of the instrument. The barrel section greatly reduces problems caused by condensation.
  • A bell that improves the volume of the lowest notes of each octave.
  • Each instrument is hand-made to order, with all notes individually hand tuned to concert pitch (A=440Hz)

This cute little handcrafted flute is in G pentatonic and can be played with one hand. It is a great gift for someone special! There are countless great songs with only five notes. The flute comes with a fingering chart and the music for 'The Riddle Song' otherwise known as 'I Gave My Love a Cherry'.

BTW, periquito is the Portuguese name for lovebird.

A fair bit of work and trial and error went into developing the Bessie and its big sibling the Sonny. The Bessie is a tribute to the incomparable Bessie Smith. The flute plays the basic Blues scale, with some extra notes that are very useful. The coolest feature of the Bessie is that the 7th note is at the bottom, where you’ve wished it would be so often. Ever tried playing ‘Blowin in the Wind’ on a standard whistle?

The standard Blues scale is usually 1, 3, 4, b5, 5, b7, which needs only 5 finger holes. So, the Bessie has an extra hole to get the 2 (a B) and also a thumb hole to get the 6 (an F#). So the scale playable on the Bessie is:

A B C D D# E F# G

There are also a few accidentals that are quite useable as are shown in the fingering chart. And to add to the coolness factor, the tuneable feature allows the head unit to be fitted either way up: normal like a penny whistle, or upside down, like a clarinet.

NOTES: * Orders are usually shipped within three days and delivery is typically less than two weeks. * My standard shipping method is via untracked international airmail. * If an order has not arrived within 30 days of shipping notification, contact me and I will post another. * Some countries may charge relevant taxes such as GST or VAT and/or further postal charges.

The Kokako is a handcrafted penny whistle in the key of G major, the result of all I have learned about whistles and flutes. This instrument is an alto whistle, named after a rare and endangered native New Zealand bird. The Kokako features a tuning slide to allow fine tuning about half a semitone each way. These whistles are tough, made from chromed aluminum and PVC. They feature:

  • A small gold painted bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave compared to the higher notes.
  • A curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a distinctive tone.
  • Accurate pitch, carefully hand tuned to A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.
  • Range of two octaves, G4 to F#6, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud!
  • A very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to most PVC or aluminium whistles.
  • A chromatic fingering chart, although not intended as a fully chromatic instrument.

They are shipped in a triangular package which is very strong. You can hear me play the Kokako whistle on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt6tBfP1rYQ

Besides the key of G, the whistle is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on A), in C and Am by half-holing the F# and of course Em.

The Bluebird is a handcrafted alto flute (penny whistle) in the key of G minor pentatonic (four holes). The scale is the one used by native american flutes and works well for native american music, plus some blues, jazz and rock styles.

The Bluebird features carefully offset tone holes to simplify fingering for small hands, made easier still by using the first and third finger of each hand. With these offsets the Bluebird can be played by beginners and children (aged about 10+). NB, the offsets are configured for the conventional hand position, left hand above right hand. If you play right hand above left, get in touch with me and I can arrange to manufacture a Bluebird with opposite offsets.

These flutes are tough, made from PVC. They feature:

  • A small bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave compared to the higher ones.
  • A curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a distinctive tone.
  • Accurate concert pitch, carefully hand tuned to A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.
  • Range of two octaves, G4 to F6, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud!
  • Offset holes to make it easier to play, but will still be difficult if you have small hands.
  • A very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to most PVC or aluminium whistles.
  • Takahe emblem of my Takahe Flutes brand.
  • Shipped in a triangular package which is very strong.

NOTES: * Guitar not included * Orders are usually shipped within three days and delivery is typically less than two weeks. * My standard shipping method is via untracked international airmail. * If an order has not arrived within 30 days of shipping notification, contact me and I will post another. * Some countries may charge relevant taxes such as GST or VAT and/or further postal charges.

A fair bit of work and trial and error went into developing this instrument! The Sonny is a tribute to all the Blues Musicians of the same name, quite a few including of course Sonny Terry. The Sonny plays the basic Blues scale, with some extra notes that are very useful. The coolest feature of the Sonny is that the 7th note is at the bottom, where you’ve wished it would be so often. Ever tried playing ‘Blowin in the Wind’ on a standard whistle?

E F# G A A# B C# D

With a few tricks, there are a few more ‘accidentals’ that are quite useable. The 7 (D) is a long way below the E and is quite difficult to reach, so the Sonny features a tone hole key like a clarinet or sax. And to add to the coolness factor, the tuneable feature allows the head unit to be fitted either way up. Normal like a penny whistle, or upside down, like a clarinet.

The Kahu (named after the Australasian Swamp Harrier) is a handcrafted low-whistle in the key of C major, based on my very popular Kakapo. The Kahu is an octave lower than C whistles like the Clarke or Generation, its bottom note corresponding to 'middle C' on a piano.

The Ruru Green (named after a New Zealand native owl) is a tuneable version of my Ruru, a handcrafted low-D PVC penny whistle in the key of D major. The tuning slide allows for fine tuning the pitch by about 30 cents each way.

These whistles are tough, made from PVC. They feature a small bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave compared to the higher notes. They also have a curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a distinctive tone. Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.

NB: The Ruru Green is a big whistle and is not recommended for beginners. However, it does feature carefully designed offsets on the tone holes that makes it easier to play for those who play with their right hand below their left. Let me know if you play with left hand below your right and I will custom make a whistle with the opposite offsets - at no extra charge!

The range of the Ruru Green is two octaves, D4 to C#6, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud! Besides the key of D, the whistle is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on E), in G by half-holing the C# and of course Bm. My whistle has a very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to many PVC or aluminium whistles and all feature the Takahe emblem of my Takahe Flutes brand. They are shipped in a triangular package which is very strong. A demo of the basic Ruru whistle is on SoundCloud here: https://soundcloud.com/john-poletti/low-d-whistle-demo-after-the-goldrush

The Kakapo features carefully offset tone holes to simplify fingering. With these offsets and use of the 'pipers grip' the Kakapo can be played even if you have relatively small hands. NB, the offsets are configured for the conventional hand position, left hand above right hand. If you play right hand above left, get in touch with me and I can arrange to manufacture a Kakapo with opposite offsets.

The range of the Kakapo is two octaves, C4 to B5, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud! Besides the key of C, the whistle is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on D), in F by half-holing the B and of course Am. My whistle has a very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to most PVC or aluminium whistles and all feature the Takahe emblem of my Takahe Flutes brand. They are shipped in a triangular package which is very strong. The Sigrún is made from PVC with a wooden 'fipple' and has three tone holes, so can be played with one hand. The scale is G pentatonic minor, but missing the F (G, Bb, C, D). The 'Peace Maker' is a Native American style two-chamber flute. Music transcends boundaries. Join the peace movement, buy a 'Peace Maker'! This flute is great for many styles, including the blues. Songs like Gershwin's Summertime are also simple to play. A demo on SoundCloud is coming soon.

The flute has four holes and is in the key of C pentatonic minor. It has a wonderful haunting tone and unlike most Native American flutes it has a full two-octave range. Main features are:

  • A front chamber rolled from thin plywood, with a layer of fiberglass cloth and thread bound to improve strength and appearance.
  • Front chamber can be removed for cleaning and transport
  • Slight adjustment of the front chamber position can control the tone of the instrument
  • A curved edge for the lip of the windway, giving a distinctive tone
  • A Takahe totem in recycled native Tawa timber
  • A small gold-painted bell/horn to improve the volume of the lowest notes of each octave
  • A hand carved comfortable wooden mouthpiece
  • All woodwork has a protective varnish coating inside and out
  • Decorative feathered tassels.

The flute is best played using the first and third finger of each hand, since the holes are quite a distance apart. An instruction sheet is included with each whistle. Delivery time is typically two weeks or less.

If you play right hand above left, get in touch with me and I can arrange to manufacture a Ruru with opposite offset.

Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow. Range is two octaves, D4 to C#5, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud! Besides the key of D, the whistle is easily played in Dorian mode (the scale starting on E), in G by half-holing the C# and of course Bm.

My whistle has a very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to most PVC or aluminium whistles and all feature the Takahe emblem of my Takahe Flutes brand. Instruction sheet included, they are shipped in a triangular package which is very strong. Sorry, Morepork not included ;-)

The Griffon is a handcrafted, tuneable low-flute in the key of C minor pentatonic (four holes), an octave lower than whistles like the Clarke Sweetone. This is a big flute and is not recommended for beginners. The Griffon features carefully offset tone holes to simplify fingering, made easier by using the first and third finger of each hand. With these offsets and use of the 'pipers grip' the Griffon can be played even if you have relatively small hands. NB, the offsets are configured for the conventional hand position, left hand above right hand. If you play right hand above left, get in touch with me and I can arrange to manufacture a Griffon with opposite offsets.

These flute are tough, made from PVC. They feature: * A small bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave compared to the higher ones. * The Griffon has an aluminium slide to allow tuning about 30 cents each way. * They also have a curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a distinctive tone. * Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow. * Range is two octaves, C4 to B6, and maybe a couple of notes higher although they are rather loud! * The Griffon features offset holes to make it easier to play, but will still be difficult if you have small hands. * My whistle has a very comfortable mouthpiece shape compared to most PVC or aluminium whistles and all feature the Takahe emblem of my Takahe Flutes brand. * They are shipped in a triangular package which is very strong.

NEW Just released, my brand new design, a quenacho inspired flute. The Ezi-Quenacho was inspired by the traditional Andean end-blown flutes widely known throughout South America. The traditional quenacho can be frustrating to learn, because of the difficulty of blowing the end notch accurately and consistently. Hence the Ezi-Quenacho! It is cross between a quenacho and a penny whistle. It has a thumb hole like a quenacho, which helps to get the higher notes more in tune and to get at least some notes of the third octave. My Ezi-Quenacho has a traditional styled foot with a stopped down diameter.

NB,This is a big flute and is not recommended for beginners. The Ezi-Quenacho features a carefully offset 'E' tone hole to simplify fingering. With the offset and use of the 'pipers grip' the Ezi-Quenacho can be played even if you have relatively small hands. The offset on the E tone hole is configured for the conventional hand position, left hand above right hand. If you play right hand above left, get in touch with me and I can arrange to manufacture a Ezi-Quenacho with opposite offset.

The Ezi-Quenacho is in the correct key of D major (D = 293.7Hz) and has an easily playable range of two octaves. The fingerings for notes of the third octave are included in the instruction sheet, but I do not guarantee you will be able to play all them. You can hear a demo of the Ezi-Quenacho on SoundCloud here: https://soundcloud.com/john-poletti/ezi-quenacho-demo-little-drummer-boy, accompanied by the Gibson SG and Vox AC30 in the photo. Sorry. guitar and amp not included! :-).

The Moa (extinct native bird, a bit like an ostrich) is a handcrafted low-whistle in the key of Eb major, almost an octave lower than D whistles like the Clarke or Feadog. These whistles are tough, made from PVC. They feature a small bell/horn which helps improve the volume of the lower notes of each octave octave compared to the higher notes. They also have a curved lip against which the air is directed like a classical flute, rather than a straight one, giving a more distinctive tone. Each whistle is carefully hand tuned to concert pitch A=440Hz, within the limits of variable air temperature and how hard you blow.

The standard Blues scale is usually 1, 3, 4, b5, 5, b7, which needs only 5 finger holes. So, the Sonny has an extra hole to get the 2 (an F#) and also a thumb hole to get the 6 (a C#). So the scale playable on the Sonny is:

E F# G A A# B C# D

With a few tricks, there are a few more ‘accidentals’ that are quite useable. The 7 (D) is a long way below the E and is quite difficult to reach, so the Sonny features a tone hole key like a clarinet or sax. And to add to the coolness factor, the tuneable feature allows the head unit to be fitted either way up. Normal like a penny whistle, or upside down, like a clarinet.

A demo of the Sonny is on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnYCRnK0SjE

Sorry, CD not included!
